Black Highland Cow

This piece began in December, but its true origin traces back to a single moment in Portree, Scotland — standing in the damp air, face‑to‑face with a Highland cow whose calm presence felt almost ceremonial. Something in the way she regarded you, steady and unhurried, stayed in your body long after you left the Isle of Skye.
Over the following months, I returned to that moment again and again while shaping the clay. The structure is built from sculptural clay blended with natural materials, giving it the same grounded weight I felt in the Scottish landscape. Layer by layer, I added texture, refining the contours until the form carried the quiet dignity of the cow I met.
The deep black synthetic fur became the final gesture — a soft, tactile surface that invites touch and mirrors the wild, wind‑tousled coat of the Highlands. At 40.6 cm tall, 30.5 cm wide, and 12.7 cm deep, the sculpture holds a compact but commanding presence, like a small altar to that encounter.
This work is not just a representation; it’s a remembrance. A way of carrying Portree home with you — the stillness, the creature, and the unexpected connectionis honored through my hands.
